According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database,
Alfred was serving in the mercantile marine as an assistant butcher on
H.M.H.S. "Llandovery Castle" (London), when he died on 27 June
1918 at the age of 18.

The records of the Union-Castle Line, found on the Web, show that
the "Llandovery Castle" was sunk by U 86 116 miles from Fastnet on
a voyage as a hospital ship with the loss of 234 lives - the worst
disaster in the Union Castle fleet.

He is remembered at the Tower Hill Memorial 1914 - 1918, which
commemorates men of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who
have no known grave. The memorial is on Tower Hill, London, on
the south side of the pleasure garden of Trinity Square. There is also
a Union-Castle War Memorial at Cayzer House, Thomas More Street,
London.
